“And this is it. This is the life we get here on earth. We get to give away what we receive. We get to believe in each other. We get to forgive and be forgiven. We get to love imperfectly. And we never know what effect it will have for years to come. And all of it…all of it is completely worth it.”
― Nadia Bolz-Weber, Accidental Saints: Finding God in All the Wrong People
We do not know about the effect that we are having. A therapist friend told me that in school, she was advised to take up knitting. She was about to go into a profession where people don’t necessarily build a thing in the day. We can get to the end of the day and wonder, did I matter today? Did I make a difference? I always harken back to the smile, to the exchange, to the gratitude or blessing for that day, because I breathed. For me, it comes down to my Internal Compass. Aliveness. Stability. Play. Justice. If these things were present, then my day felt nourished and well fed. And here’s the magic, because we cannot know what effect it will have. We must greet it with joy.
I often share that it takes about half of my clients 6 months to work with me. We have a sample session and they come back. The effects, we just don’t know.
MANTRA: May I honor this moment, this day in my own life. May I remember and affirm that this, too, is worth it.
JOURNAL: What did I get today? What did I give away? Whom/what am I forgiving? Where might I need forgiveness?
These Soulful Sunday blogs go out weekly on Sundays to be used as a place to step back from the hustle and bustle and explore what your soul might be saying to you. Some folks use these as journal prompts and let loose amidst pages. Some folks bring them to the kitchen table and jam over coffee. Do you, boo.
