“You need to actually feel that feeling. You need to know what is happening in your body. You need to know where your right toe or pinkie is. It’s very, very basic, you know, but sorely lacking in our diagnostic system– simple things like eating and peeing and pooping are the foundation for everything. And breathing.” – Bessel Vander Kolk
When a client has a really intense session, when there’s a lot of feelings or crying, I always remind them at the end that their next job is to go drink a lot of water.lush the system, eat really nourishing food, and get rest. Our bodies are pointing the way. They are our foundation. They make us of this world, but often we forget the basics and they need a recalibration. In this world where we drink venti lattes and indoor lights screw with our body’s circadian rhythms, we can be fooled into thinking that we can push through multiple 14 hour days in front of a computer screen and be ok with five hours of sleep. It is not the case. Lots of water. The sleep your body needs. Food that actually nourishes your system. Creativity, fun and community. You’re wired for it. Your body has a will to live, and rest is a part of it. Cycles and seasons. Tune in. Do the basics.
These Soulful Sunday blogs go out weekly on Sundays to be used as a place to step back from the hustle and bustle and explore what your soul might be saying to you. Some folks use these as journal prompts and let loose amidst pages. Some folks bring them to the kitchen table and jam over coffee. Do you, boo.
