“Side coaching is a necessary message to alert your total organism, your whole self to keep you in process and present time while releasing spontaneity, hidden wisdom, and intuition.” – Viola Spolin
I’ve been teaching simple improv exercises to my clients, because all of life feels like improv. We’re making it up. Even if you go to the same place every day, you have the option to make it different– different interactions, different presence. Stay HERE now. Enter Side Coaching, as a tool. When you side coach yourself, you tell yourself the words you need to hear to keep going. Ever gone for a run and had to coach yourself to the finish line? Pitched a higher salary to your boss? How about to say the vulnerable thing in your relationship, like, be the first one to say, “I love you” or “I want to leave”? These are moments when we have to actively engage our inner Side Coach. We side coach ourselves all the time. Trust this. What are the words you need to hear? Where can you go deeper in your life? What needs to be seen, felt, heard? You are your best side coach. What are the words you’d give back to yourself?
These Soulful Sunday blogs go out weekly on Sundays to be used as a place to step back from the hustle and bustle and explore what your soul might be saying to you. Some folks use these as journal prompts and let loose amidst pages. Some folks bring them to the kitchen table and jam over coffee. Do you, boo.
