“To love means to open ourselves to the negative as well as the positive – to grief, sorrow, and disappointment as well as to joy, fulfillment and an intensity of consciousness we did not know was possible before.” – Rollo May
Perhaps it is not the degree to which we feel happy that speaks to a life, but rather the degree to which we allow ourselves to engage in the emotional current in our life that determines our levels of happiness.
The deepest loves of my life have also made and held space for sorrow, for grief, huge containers for confusion, as well as joy and celebration. These are not easy to achieve. They require a depth. They call for us to stay IN. To learn to breath through the intensity. Our lives are about deepening our capacity to be WITH. It is then that we experience the spectrum we crave.
